Mr. UnBelievable Special Preview and Movie Review

This is truly the most amazing Singaporean movie ever made. Singapore most popular dialect Hokkien also came into the movie as one of active ingredients. It also happened in the year when Singapore celebrated 50th years of nation building ( SG50 2015). The passing of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, our Singapore founding father, all become successful ingredients for a good and delicious movie.

As Singaporean, we understood our multi culture and languages well and because of the rojak (mixed-up languages), we have a  laughable common language deeply embedded into our DNA. The movie addresses all these together with good actings from the various actors. Remembering the past and putting the retro into play, also help to bring back good old memories of the past Singapore. Indeed, it helps to connect the older generations of Singaporeans including me to feel for the movie. At the same time, let the younger generations understand the old Singapore.

The movie does give hope to those who are still struggling in the Singapore society but bring joys to those who are watching the movie. That feel good feelings simply fill our needs for wanting more from this movie.

With all the laughters we heard from the audience, especially the one sitting next to my wife, that laughter was a genuine and happy one ( you know who you are ). Amidst the laughters, then came the tears at the end when our founding father photo, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew appeared and words on the SG50 song touched our hearts as we remember Singaporeans including myself queued quietly without any complains (we usually complain a lot) to pay our last respect for our founding father.

Mr. UnBelievable SG50 Song

At the end of special preview of the movie, a surprise was installed for the audience. The director and three actors came down from the back to greet the audience. I happened to be the official photographer for this special preview. Here are the photos of our beloved actors.

The director, Ong Kuo Sin (王国燊) and lead actor Chan Tian Wen (陈天文) have performed well in their roles and interestingly, Mr. Unbelievable started much earlier as a viral video in Youtube which garnered a huge followings. This may well be the best marketing strategy to turn a video clip into a successful full fledged movie. We shall never forget about this movie. Hopefully, there will be a part 2 coming soon.

I shall rated this movie 4.2 / 5.  Currently showing in the cinema near you. Oh before I forget, expect some twists at the end of the movie. Remember to watch it on the big screen to appreciate.

Once again, thanks to Clover Films SG and Kevin for the invite.

Review

This is the first time I am watching a Vietnamese produced horror movie. In fact, I have never watch a Vietnamese produced movie if my memory did not fail me. I do have the same feeling as the others who have watch this show. The feeling is like watching a Thai produced horror movie.

This horror movie borrowed a number of things from other horror movies from Japan, Thailand, Chinese and even from Hollywood movie. Unborn child, ghost crawling, body buried in unnatural location, unsettled Spirit, unexpected ending twist, mysterious musical box, shocked treatment ( although it did not have much effect on me ), mediumship ( bridging the communication gap between the living and dead ), young child ability to communicate with the dead and humour, all brought together to roll out this movie into a reasonably good watchable movie.

The photography and scenes were exceptional impressive given that the Director of Photography, Gabriel, have worked on many famous movies as stated earlier on the profile of Gabriel. One interesting thing is that most of the background scenes are full of texture such as dirty and old wall, interesting wooden bathtub, old but interesting structured building and home decoration. Even the hospital seem to have a lot of texture on the wall and background. Lighting is great since it is a horror movie.

Mysterious settings such as the musical box further enhances the horror theme of the  movie. The main character, Lan, somehow I felt, bare a keen resemblance to the pop singer, Rihana. The acting is good especially Lan and Thao. But the 5 years old boy was truly the star of the show whom charm me with his adorable role.

The movie started showing on the 14 May 2015. I shall give the movie a rating of 3/5. If you need some shocks and mysterious moments, grab a ticket and popcorn and enjoy a reasonably good show. If you think you are going to have  weak legs after the show, do go with someone who can help you up your seat when the movie ends.

Review :

Coming from the Korean director of fame comedy movie "My Sassy Girl", KWAK Jae-young, it will be a fun and enjoyable romantic comedy. Well, that’s what the Korean director is good at.  It is that kind of show that make your heart feel good from the start to the end and of course, a happy ending. That’s probably the known secret ingredient of a romantic comedy.

If the fame Korean director still does not convince you to watch the movie, let the box office taking convince you whole-heartily. When it was released on December 5, 2014 in China, and by December 20, 2014, the film had earned ¥139.17 million at the Chinese box office. Not bad for a romantic comedy.

How it ends, well, if you just cannot wait, go for the first day of the screening in the cinema near you. That is on February 5, 2015. Have an early Valentine celebration (February 14, 2015) with your girlfriend or boyfriend or even ex-gf or bf (now husband and wife), by watching this fun filled movie.

The main actress, Zhou Xun, one of the hottest Chinese actresses today truly live up to her reputation while the main actor, Tong Dawei, a seasoned actor add the extra sparkle into the movie. In fact, I think he worked very hard since his character required him to help, cheer-up and take care of Zhou Xu who was depressed with her premature menopause syndrome.

At times, there are touching moments where Tong Dawei would plan everything to ensure the care of Zhou Xun. It is only when you truly love a person; you will be able to sacrifice so much for the person. At the end of the movie, the director decided to let the cat out of the bag by flashing some of the scenes of Tong Dawei. What did he do? Watch it and you will know the answer.

Ratings:

In my opinion, good movie always come with a twist. There is no twist but the director decided to explain what Tong Dawei did earlier in the movie by showing some of the scenes at the end. In a way, it is to get the audience understand the true meaning of love and sacrifices. Watch it together with your love ones and feel good. I shall rate it 4/5 stars.

The movie will be showing in cinema on 05 February 2015.

DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART 2 《单身男女2》

Cheng and Fang, meanwhile, live happily ever after…… That seems to be the fairytale ending from DON’T GO BREAKING MY HEART. In reality, the story is far from over: the three finds themselves once again entangled in an even more complicated relationship in DON’T GO BREAKING MY HEART 2.

After jilted by Cheng, Cheung starts dating “Goddess of Stocks” Yang Yang Yang, who works in an opposite building. Yang has been turning a blind eye to Cheung’s philandering until she meets Paul, a romantic returnee from France whose devotion has melted her heart.

It turns out that Cheng’s wedding with Fang has been delayed and she is now directly working under Yang. A chance encounter with Cheng again makes Cheung question his decision, because even though he appears to have emerged unscathed from their previous relationship, he was profoundly hurt and still hasn’t fully recovered.

Review:

This is the sequence to the first movie of the same title without the 2 behind. Unfortunately, I have not seen the first movie. I shall make an effort to watch it later.

Don’t go breaking my heart 2 is a romantic comedy which focus on city love relationship. In this movie, there are more than the usual triangle love relationships which make the relationships a complex one. With the love hate relationships and misunderstandings, it makes this movie interesting and comical.

The use of two buildings with open windows creates some memorable comical scenes which brought some really loud laughter from the audiences. Another interesting thing that drew a lot of laughter came from the Louis Koo inability to take control of his testosterone which drives his behaviour.

Besides giving the audience some happy moments, the movie does relate a strong message to courting couple. Loving a person is to accept what he is and not what you want him to be. Thus, love is blind and you cannot use some complex logical deduction to make your relationship decision.

Ratings:

In my opinion, it may be a bit silly in some of moments in the movie but overall, it opened the minds of courting couple with a fair share of jokes and comical scenes. With Miriam Yeung appearing in this comedy movie, it will definitely keep my face stretched with uncontrollable laughter. I shall rate it 3.5/5 stars.

The movie will be showing in cinema on 13 November 2014.
